Swiss guitarist/composer Jürg Kindle has, in recent years, produced many interesting and varied guitar-related works including ones from solo through to guitar orchestra. With Back to the Roots he offers the Intermediate grade player a chance to get to grips with a full-scale, good length composition in three movements. The opening seven-page Sonata grabs the attention immediately with the initial repeated motif which is enlarged upon during the duration of the piece. With plenty of melody lines and flowing arpeggios Kindle takes the player on a lively and delightful musical excursion around the fingerboard. Contrasting sharply with this is the following Adagio, a song-like and slightly mournful piece which, once again is quite charming. An energetic third movement in the form of a jig concludes the piece in high spirits. To write good quality material and keep it from extending into the higher echelons of the upper grade player takes skill; Kindle has succeeded on all fronts with this very attractive work.
