The combination of flute, guitar and cello may be a little thin on the ground in comparison to many another ensembles but for those in this situation this new work by the very skilful guitarist/composer Nathan Kolosko is to be highly recommended. A sombre, emotive brief Prelude leads on to an up-tempo, highly rhythmic Round Dance which pulsates its way through nearly seventy changes of time Signature within ten pages of music, the varying rhythmic possibilities obtained by these different times driving the music forward in an exciting second movement. A return to solemnity comes with the seriousness of Ancient Melody where the Hungarian influence is very much in evidence. The suite ends in spectacular fashion with another dance which relies heavily upon many changes of time Signature to obtain the rhythmic effect. Throughout, there are no low points in this piece; each movement has interest and character. The Koloska's compositions have come my way several times for review in the past and never once can I remember being disappointed with his writing. Here is another to add to the list of ever growing very good, attention-grabbing works from a skilled musician. Presentation is excellent and the edition comes with full score and separate parts. Technically this is really only in the domain of the high grade player. Steve Marsh
