Crunch Time is a piece about the art of procrastination.
Psychologist Adam Grant talks about a “sweet spot” of moderate procrastination, which can help give your brain time to consider a task or problem - thinking time. Grant argues that this generates space for greater creativity and innovation.
The first movement of Crunch Time suggests the mood and atmosphere of thinking time: calm, spacious, and still. Ideas begin to crystalise in the viola cadenza before a deadline-driven frenzy of activity in the finale.
Crunch Time was commissioned by Trifarious. The first performance took place on 10th May 2019 as part of the Guildford International Music Festival.
