Guitar orchestra
8 p. + separated parts
Guit. I-IV, contrabass
This is a short, well-structured rhythmic piece with a modal feel. Set for four guitar parts, plus contrabasse, which can be taken by a standard instrument, the piece opens with homophonic chords over a syncopated ostinato pedal which immediately captures attention. The main thematic idea is very simpIe and is shared between guitars one and two while the other parts maintain the ostinato effect. Statements of this theme are punctuated by more chordal sections and the piece closes with a dramatic build up over the pedal A to the final A major chord. This piece has a lot to offer the inexperienced orchestra as everything is straightforwardnone of the parts go beyond what could be expected from a grade one player and all the notes are within the first five frets. Also, while there are the usual ensemble challenges particularly of playing the chords exactly together, the piece is musically exciting and would appeal to a wide range of players. I like the way the ostinato is used in guitar three, maintaining the rhythm with very simple notes; and guitar four has a very small range of notes but plenty of rhythmic interest, and is suitable for the least experienced players in the group. Dynamics would have been useful; nothing is fingered; but presentation is good. Excellent for the end of term concert, or for any amateur group to enjoy. Recommended.
