This Swiss composer is a new name to me, but on the basis of this very interesting and thoroughly engaging duo, which is incidentally subtitled 'Percussion Guitar Music No2, Duo No l' on the title page, I would be very happy to see more of his work.
Firstly it was really helpful to see a page devoted to exactly what the title meant. So many times with this publishing house l have been left in the dark as to the meaning behind the title of a work and it is refreshing to see that they have finally started to help the players out by telling them what the piece actually refers to. Having found out that it is a modern form of Rumba l was able to understand exactly how to approach the playing of the piece. From the outset the rhythms of the two parts are exciting, and not too difficult to play or read. The music is very tonal but slightly offbeat, just enough in fact to keep your attention rooted throughout. The parts constantly react and interact with each other in a totally unhackneyed fashion and the entire piece is a great deal of fun to play. The players. by necessity have to be moderately advanced, in order to fully negotiate the work's rhythmic complexities but this should not put off players of about grade 6 or so, from having a go at it, for it is really worth the effort. Try it and see!
