The Italian guitarist Guiseppe Torrisi has had a number of works published by d'OZ and with the exception of this one and a piece for bandoneon and guitar, are all guitar solos. Having heard and played through several of his original compositions I have always found his music to be captivating, either rhythmically or melodically, the melody lines often staying in the memory long after the piece has concluded. His strong lyrical style is very evident in Aldebaran where the calm plaintive and expressive tune from the flautist floats above some lovely harmonies. Choosing the key of D minor (with sixth string tuned to D) has given Torrisi the opportunity for some beautiful sounds performed in high position perfectly complementing the soaring melody line. This short-lived work would make for an ideal encore piece in any recital, hopefully sending the audience home in a relaxed manner. The technical standard is of Intermediate-plus grade and the edition comes with full score and separate part for the flute. Steve Marsh
