Roger Matton belongs to a generation of Quebec composers that arose from the composition classes of Claude Champagne at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal, including François Morel, Pierre Mercure, Serge Garant and others. While in Paris he studied with Andrée Vauraboug-Honegger, Nadia Boulanger and Olivier Messiæn. Several of his orchestral works have been performed and recorded in Canada, the United States and Europe. Since 1956 he has been attached to the Archives de Folklore de l'Université Laval in Quebec. In 1984 Roger Matton was awarded the Order of Canada for his contribution to the preservation of the Folkmusic of Acadia and Quebec.
