Ricardo Abreu was born in Porto and started his music studies when he was seven years old. In 1987 he started the Guitar Course at the Music Conservatoire in Porto under the supervision of Mário Carreira, and completed it in 1993. In 1995 he continued his studies with José Pina at ESMAE (Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espectáculo) in Porto and in 2001 performed his Final Recital leading to his being awarded with a Guitar Degree. In 2005 he obtained his Teaching Degree from Aveiro University. He attended post-graduate courses with Alexandre Rodrigues, Leo Brouwer, Roberto Aussel, Robert Brightmore and Alberto Ponce. He has performed solo recitals in Portugal, Scotland, France and the USA (in Richmond, Virginia), with the String Orchestra of the Porto Music Conservatoire under the supervision of the conductor Kamen Goleminov, and with the OCE (Orquestra Clássica de Espinho) under the conductor Cesário Costa. His performances have also been recorded both by radio (RDP) and television (RTP). He has been involved in a duet performance with guitar, voice, flute, cello, violin and recently with the Guitar Quartet QuarTASTO. He was one of the founding members of ‘Vozes da Rádio’, an Acapella group. At present he teaches in Espinho, at the Music Academy and at the Professional School of Music, and in Leça da Palmeira. In addition to this, he also writes guitar transcriptions and arrangements for pieces originally meant for other instruments.
