6 guitars
32 p. + separated parts
Valse Jaune is so large that the parts are packed separately. Complex writing, syncopation and changes of time signature make this no simple one-two-three dance. A plaintive opening in two fiats quickly fans out into big stabbing chords, discordant yet spacious and enticing. Much of the writing is high on the guitar, giving a close-harmony feel with chords that no solo guitar could reproduce. With careful attention to the part writing and generous rests, the musicnever sounds crowded, and when all six guitars play together, the texture is frequently light and airy. There are passages where the parts are an octave apart but this is no filler, it adds brilliance to the soundscape. Tambor and brushed fingers are given considerable room to breathe, and sometimes the ensemble is down to two instruments. Halfway into this substantial piece, a classical waltz unfurls, plaintively and delicately. The closing section reprises the opening with some busy writing with complex chords and progressions that owe more to jazz than a simple label of «modern«. A tough piece but an interesting sound that might just succeed with an audience hearing it for the first time.
