Jean-Maurice Mourat was born in France, and is now living in Andalusia, Spain. He started studying piano at a very young age. As a teenager influenced by jazz music, he learned the clarinet and the guitar on his own, until he met the italian guitarist Oscar Ghiglia. He owes him not only his passion for the guitar, but especially the precious pedagogical notions used to write his method, Six cordes... une guitare, the four volumes of La guitare classique, and Guitariste... et vous, a simple method dedicated to beginners. The vivid friendship developped with composer Yvonne Desportes, professor at the Conservatoire Supérieur de Musique de Paris, allowed him to benefit from her judicious advice in order to improve his numerous compositions for solo guitar or guitar with other instruments. Alongside composition, he taught guitar in Paris, then in the wider area of Paris, where he was named director of two conservatories, all the while pursuing his career as a concert guitarist and lutenist. The French Prime Minister, recognizing his merits as a pedagogue in France and abroad, appointed him to the rank of Chevalier, then Officier à l’ordre de palmes académiques.
His latest recording has been released by Ibs Classical. His chamber music recordings inspired by Andalusian music, have been awarded a gold disc by the famous magazine Melómano. They are published by Productions d'Oz.
