François-Hugues Leclair (Montreal, 1962) has shared his lifetime between Quebec and France; many changes of perspectives have enriched his imaginary world, in the different places where he lived : Paris, Bordeaux, Strasbourg, Quebec-City, Ottawa region, îles-de-la-Madeleine and Vaudreuil.
He followed his higher musical studies at the Conservatory in France, between 1990 and 1998 (Strasbourg, Paris) and came back to complete a Doctorate in composition with Dr. Michel Longtin at the University of Montreal, where he is Professor since 2002.
He has built during these years a personal language based on the musical idea, with a large palette of writing techniques, around two essential axis: the exploration of bridges between ancient music and contemporary musical languages (on modern and/or ancient instruments).
the search for relations between litterature and music (therefore, the importance of vocal music in his catalogue), equally present in the inspiration of many instrumental pieces:
His commitment as a performer in Ensemble Kô (2006-2018), a Montreal vocal ensemble with variable geometry, reflects these creative perspectives; the central place occupied by the voice in his work is rooted in an assiduous practice of polyphonic vocal art up to Bach and after Wagner, on both sides of the tonal period, a new axis of polarity between ancient music and contemporary.
